Next up in our Ocean Art Walk 2014 in Stanley series is liina klauss and her artwork lost'n'found.

liina, tell us about yourself
I'm a German born artist who has been living in Hong Kong for seven years now. I create paintings and installations using reclaimed materials: old books, rusty wires and objects that wash ashore on Hong Kong beaches like driftwood and plastics. http://liinaklauss.blogspot.hk/

http://liinaklauss.blogspot.hk/

Tell us about your artwork lost'n'found lost’n’found showcases objects that we use every day. It urges us to be aware that our decisions and actions inevitably contribute to waste pollution with serious global consequences. We are responsible for these daily objects, not only for as long as they are being used, but for as long as they exist. We have the power to create positive change to improve the lives of the next generation. Value more, waste less!

What were the challenges in creating this piece of art?
The piece I created is a hawker stall filled entirely with debris from the ocean. Most people think the challenge was to find enough rubbish to be able to fill the stall. But sadly it just took three days to collect. There is so much man-made rubbish in the ocean you could fill all of Hong Kong with it! The biggest challenge for me is to know and see that reality every day and not get depressed by it, but shift into action!

Any tips for young people who want to create environmental/recycled art?
The great thing about environmental art is that you don't need to go and buy expensive art supplies. Everything you need is supplied by nature. e.g. Andy Goldworthy just uses leaves to create the most stunning art! Creating environmental art or land art is about being receptive and open for your surroundings. Open your eyes and ears and let the beauty of nature inspire you! The one piece of practical advice I always give is to be very aware of the way you join your pieces together. By using synthetic glue, your artwork might look good from the outside. But as an artist you are responsible for what you create. Can you disassemble it? Is it recyclable? Is it biodegradable? You don't want to create just another piece of rubbish!

If you had a super power, what would it be?
I'd love to be able to fly: soaring light-weight and graceful like the kites in the skies of Hong Kong must be the ultimate visual and physical experience! I'd love to have their sharp eyes and almost 360 degree vision, too. I bet there are a lot of things to discover no human has ever laid eyes on.

If you could meet an artist for a day, who would it be?
Do you know Swoon? Swoon is a street artist from New York doing paper cuts as tall as trees, pasting them up on walls. Her work is incredibly intricate and labour-intensive and she leaves it in the streets for everyone to admire. While living in Berlin, she pasted one of her works close to my studio. It was beautiful to see time and the elements take over her work. I'd love to spend a day with her in the streets of New York or Berlin or Hong Kong!

More About Beach Waste Did you know that over 80% of waste found on beaches originates from land? Even landlocked societies can impact our oceans through littering and polluting their waterways. In Hong Kong, plastic accounts for nearly 40% of the volume in our landfills. Most people treat plastic waste as disposable material, when in fact all this waste has the potential of returning to the economy if managed properly. Few people are aware that one metric tonne of recyclable plastic is worth more than a metric tonne of steel. Starting with ourselves, we can make sure that this resource doesn’t go to waste, nor pollute our waters by recycling the plastic we use each day.
